Bega Cheese heralds new direction for De Cicco Industries
24 October 2008 Bega Cheese
Bega Cheese and De Cicco Industries today announced an important transaction in the history of both
companies. Over the past few months Bega Cheese and De Cicco Industries have been examining ways to
best utilise the infrastructure and milk supply of both organisations. As a result of discussions, Bega
Cheese Limited has entered into an agreement with De Cicco Industries to purchase the assets of the De
Cicco business.
"The De Cicco family have had a long history in the Victorian dairy industry and value our association with
our customers and farmers alike. We are very proud of the business we have established and our recently
newly constructed cheese manufacturing plant", Mary Bevilacqua, Managing Director of De Cicco
Industries commented.
De Cicco Industries currently manufactures approximately 5,000 tonnes of Cheddar and Mozzarella cheese
and has a milk pool approaching 60 million litres of milk. The central location of De Cicco Industries means
that it sources milk from all three distinct dairying regions of Victoria (Gippsland, Northern Victoria and
Western Districts).
"The addition of the De Cicco infrastructure to our growing business will assist in addressing the increasing
need for bulk cheese to service the continually growing demand for retail and natural processed cheese
from both domestic and export markets which Bega Cheese currently services from its packaging plant
located in Bega", Barry Irvin, Chairman of Bega Cheese added.
Barry Irvin further commented, "Bega Cheese's high quality manufacturing and value added capacities
positions Bega Cheese well to meet our customer needs and take the future opportunities that the dairy
industries will inevitably present us with".
Bega Cheese will now have access to strategically located infrastructure in Bega, Melbourne, and Tatura.
Bega Cheese's 70% shareholding in Tatura Milk Industries has greatly expanded the product range and
customer base available to the Bega Cheese group.
Mary Bevilacqua said, "The De Cicco family have developed our business to the point where it is ready to be
expanded to the next level. We are delighted that we have been able to reach agreement with Bega Cheese,
as it is a company that like ourselves clearly values its long term relationships with its customers and
suppliers. It is wonderful to have been able to secure future opportunities for the many people associated
with De Cicco Industries as a result of this transaction".

Logistics Team Recognised at Bega Cheese
10 December 2007 Bega Cheese
Bega Cheese has taken out the Best Manufacturer category of the 2007 Logistics Mercury Awards; finalists included multi-national companies Cadbury-Schweppes and Parmalat. The awards ceremony, held at The Rocks in Sydney last week, was attended by Bega Cheese Supply Chain Manager, Grattan Smith, who accepted the award on behalf of the company.
“This recognition by industry leaders is a reflection of the commitment that the logistics and supply chain staff have made over many years, and follows the four-fold growth in volume through the Bega Cheese plant over the past seven years,” Mr Smith said.
Supply chain efficiency occurs when all components of a product come together to be available when the customer demands it. Bega Cheese has implemented strategies that maintain supply chain consistency, reliability and profitability, ensuring that timely product supply can be achieved on a regular basis.
Mr Smith further commented, “Supply chain management underpins business development and growth. Our goal at Bega Cheese is to remain flexible and responsive to our customers' needs, stay cost competitive and reduce time-to-market. Winning the Mercury Award for best manufacturing logistics recognises the efforts and contributions of the Logistics Team, who are vital to the success of this part of our business.”

Bega Cheese positioned for strong future
22 November 2007 Bega Cheese
The reporting of a record profit of $18.1 million before distributions at this year's AGM underlined a year of significant achievement for Bega Cheese. Revenues of almost $300 million and earnings before interest, tax and depreciation of $25 million reflected another year of growth and success.
The reported strong financial performance was further added to with the consolidation of the recently acquired Tatura Milk Industries business into the annual accounts. Bega Cheese's successful acquisition of 70% of Tatura Milk Industries on 23 April 2007 resulted in consolidated revenues for the group growing to $340 million and a consolidated profit of $22.2 million.
Chairman of Bega Cheese, Barry Irvin, commented, “We are pleased to report strong profit and revenues for the Bega Cheese business for the 2006 / 2007 financial year, and the successful investment in Tatura Milk Industries. The Bega Cheese group now has under its control assets of approximately $277 million, and continues to strengthen its position as a significant participant in the Australian dairy industry.”
The Bega Cheese group now has access to a milk pool of approximately 500 million litres, located in southern New South Wales and northern Victoria. The strategic importance of multiple sites, diversified product range and increased business growth opportunities were emphasised at the meeting by Tatura Milk Industries CEO, Maurice Van Ryn.
Mr Irvin further commented, “Our investment of $38.6 million in the Tatura Milk Industries business has already yielded strong benefits for the Bega Cheese business with synergies in milk and product supply, procurement, sales and marketing, and corporate services.”
While Bega Cheese continued to grow and invest in its dairy businesses, it was also cognisant of the impact of the continuing drought on shareholders. Distributions in the form of co-operative premiums across milk of $9 million and dividends of $3 million were also reflected in this year's accounts.
At his address to shareholders Mick Byrnes, Bega Cheese CEO, said, “It is pleasing to report a profit that is 70% up on last year's record profit. This strong profit performance has underwritten our ability to continue to support our shareholders in another year when they have had to deal with difficult farming and climatic circumstances. Despite continuing drought conditions and rising grain costs, milk supply increased in the financial year, reflecting a tremendous effort by the farmers who supply Bega Cheese.”

Bega Cheese Donates $17,550 to Local Surf Clubs
4 April 2007 Bega Cheese
At the official dinner of the Bega Cheese Corporate Event on Thursday 8 March, a charity auction was held to raise funds for the Surf Life Saving Movement. The auction was a very spirited affair with several enthusiastic bidders eager to outdo the competition on the night. The result was a very convincing $17,550 for the Surf Life Saving Movement, to be distributed to the Tathra, Pambula and Bermagui Clubs.
Auction items including signed sporting memorabilia donated by Mission Australia, a 1982 bottle of Penfolds Grange, limited edition grading irons from the UK, and travel vouchers. Notable purchases on the night were Maurice Van Ryn's tie which sold for $1,400, and what can only be considered a 'premium' price for cheddar; $2,200 for a year's supply of show-winning Bega Strong 'n Bitey.
The corporate event is an annual function, allowing Bega Cheese to host corporate guests and colleagues from the dairy industry in the Bega Valley. Guests are invited to participate in the pro-am that this year was held at Tura Beach Country Club, or for the less experienced golfers, at an Ambrose event at the Tathra course. The non-golfers were hosted on one of 9 charter fishing boats, that left from Merimbula.
Guests over the three day event included customers from all over Australia, as well as visitors from the UK, Japan and Ireland. The Thursday night dinner brought all participants together at the Merimbula-Imlay Bowling Club, filling the Sapphire Room to capacity and providing a great atmosphere for the charity auction later in the evening. The corporate event was again a great success, thanks to the many corporate and local sponsors that took the opportunity to advertise and ensure its success.

Bega Cheese to raise money for Australian farming communities: Ten cents from every purchase to go to fund
4 April 2007 Bega Cheese
Bega Cheese has today launched a national drought relief fund that is expected to raise in excess of $600,000 for Australian farming communities for a six month period.
To kick off the project, Bega Cheese will donate $100,000 as an advance on the total amount raised.
From May 21, 2007 to November 18, 2007 ten cents from every block of Bega cheese sold will go to the Bega Cheese: Connecting Communities fund, which will be distributed to drought affected families and communities by the Country Women's Association of Australia (CWAA).
Barry Irvin, Chairman Bega Cheese, said the fund enables every Australian to support drought-affected farmers and communities and to make a positive difference to their lives.
“One of the wonderful things about living in rural Australia is that you are never left to face challenges alone. Neighbours are always there to help in a crisis, whether they are from next door, another region or across the country.
“Bega Cheese and its dairy farmers have faced extraordinarily difficult circumstances over the past few years. With resilience typical of farmers and the support of Bega Cheese, our farmers have continued to supply the quality milk that has made our cheese famous.
“Fortunately there have been good rains in the Bega Valley since February and there has been at least some relief from the drought. Other areas have been less fortunate. It is with this in mind that Bega Cheese is delighted to launch the Bega Cheese: Connecting Communities fund,” said Mr Irvin.
Bega Cheese has partnered with the CWAA, which has the nationwide resources to distribute the funds and provide future support to drought-affected families.
According to the CWAA, they receive hundreds of applications every week and they do not have sufficient funds to help everyone, so the funds from the Bega Cheese: Connecting Communities fund will help to ease the backlog of applications. The CWAA issues assistance grants of up to $2000 per family and $3000 for community groups according to strict guidelines that are reviewed and endorsed by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
Based on current sales volumes, Bega Cheese expects to be able to donate in excess of $600,000. Bega Cheese has committed to a six month period so there is no real limit to how much can be raised – it all depends on the number of products sold.
Bega is Australia's favourite cheese and has been in Australian fridges for generations. While Bega Cheese emanates from the Bega Valley in New South Wales, it is enjoyed by all Australians.
Bega Cheese is proud to be able to contribute to drought-affected farmers and communities, and encourages all of its loyal customers to continue buying Bega Cheese to support Australian farmers.

Bega Cheese Announces Major Investment in Tatura Milk Industries
9 February 2007 Bega Cheese
Bega Cheese has entered into an agreement with Victorian dairy manufacturer, Tatura Milk Industries, to achieve a cornerstone investment in the company. The proposal to be put to the Tatura shareholders will see Bega Cheese invest approximately $39 million in Tatura in the form of a share acquisition. The transaction will see Bega acquire a 70% shareholding in Tatura Milk Industries.
The opportunity to acquire a majority shareholding in a leading Australian dairy company is an excellent business investment for Bega Cheese. The deal will offer the company access to a broader product range and expanded customer base and milk pool, create opportunities for synergies between the two companies, and strengthen the position of both the Tatura Milk Industries and Bega Cheese businesses.
This strategic investment by Bega Cheese sees a further rationalisation of the Australian dairy industry, bringing together two companies each with a history of over 100 years of success in the Australian and international dairy industry.
Bega Cheese is an Australian icon company located on the south coast of New South Wales with a revenue of $300 million. The company is owned by 100 dairy farmers, producing natural and processed cheddar cheese, whey powder and butter for Australian and export markets around the world. Bega Cheese currently employs over 500 staff members, all located in the Bega Valley.
Bega Cheese Chairman, Barry Irvin, commented, “Bega Cheese is pleased to have successfully reached agreement with Tatura Milk Industries, this is an important strategic move for Bega at a time when increasing competition, challenging markets and difficult environmental conditions dictate that dairy businesses take every opportunity to rationalise and grow.”
Tatura Milk Industries is located in the Goulburn Valley in northern Victoria, one of Australia's premier agricultural regions, with a revenue of $270 million. In the 2005/06 year, Tatura processed over 400m litres of milk, producing cream cheese, infant formula and milk powders. Tatura Milk Industries currently employs over 300 people.
Ian Bertram, Chairman of Tatura Milk Industries, said, “I am delighted that after dealing with many enquiries, the Tatura Milk Industries Board is unanimously recommending to shareholders the acceptance of the Bega Cheese proposal, which I am sure will bring new energy, ideas and opportunities to Tatura, ensuring our future success.”
This significant strategic move by Bega Cheese further strengthens its footprint in the Australian dairy industry and continues a record of success and development in recent years that will see its combined revenues grow from less than $100 million 5 years ago, to more than $500 million on successful completion of the transaction.
The proposal will be put to Tatura shareholders for their approval in April.
