Barry Irvin has extensive experience in the dairy industry and has been Chairman of Bega Cheese since 2000. Barry’s leadership has seen Bega Cheese grow from a small regionally based dairy company to now one of the largest dairy companies in Australia, supplying a large range of dairy products in Australia and around the world.

Barry’s depth of knowledge of the industry includes a significant understanding of the issues affecting Australian dairy farmers, the key investments required to meet changing consumer needs and the management of long term customer relationships.

Barry was awarded the NAB Agribusiness Leader of the Year in 2009 and the Rabobank Leadership Award for 2011.  Barry is very aware of the importance of social responsibility, he has been Chairman of Giant Steps, an organisation providing services to children and young adults with autism since 2002.  In 2008 Barry was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for contributions to children with disability and the Australia dairy industry.

Max Roberts MaxRoberts

Max is one of the few first generation dairy farmers having bought the farm in the Bega Valley some 33 years ago.  This followed a long career in journalism.  The year after purchasing the farm Max joined the Board of Bega Cheese and from then has been part of the company’s development to the current day.  Max also became involved in Agri politics and at one stage headed up the dairy farmer lobby group in NSW and was Vice President of the National Dairy Representative Organisation.

During that time Max was invited onto other Boards and represented other organisations gaining broad experience in both the agri political area and Board governance.  Max currently chairs the dairy industry’s peak body Dairy Australia Limited and has represented the Australian dairy industry both nationally and internationally.

While fulfilling many representative roles, Max has never lost the passion for dairy farming and he and his wife run a very successful dairy business in the Bega Valley.

Raelene Murphy Raelene Murphy (137x168)

Raelene is a Managing Director of the 333 Group which specialises in company led restructuring and turnaround.

Raelene has a proven track record in financial and operational turnaround both as an advisor and as CEO/CFO across a number of industry sectors in the private and public arena. Her industry experience includes senior roles locally and internationally with Mars Inc. in planning, finance and supply chain management and as CEO of the Delta Group.  Raelene’s advisory career has been with PWC and as Partner of a mid-tier national accounting firm where she led the Turnaround practice.

Raelene has a particular expertise in difficult and crisis situations and her practical approach provides solutions to stabilise and transform underperforming businesses. In all her roles she has driven and overseen change and she has a keen understanding of how organisations work.  Raelene is also a Director of publically listed EVZ Limited and not for profit DOXA which provides support for disadvantaged youth in furthering their education and entering the work force.

Richard Parbery Richard Parbery

Richard is a Fellow of the Australian Society of Certified Practising Accountants and a Registered Company Auditor. Richard is a Tax Agent and Business Advisor in a large accounting practice on the far south coast of New South Wales and controls a large family farm on the outskirts of Bega, New South Wales.

Richard is a Non-executive Director of Bega Cheese since November 2000.

Richard operates a 2,200 acre predominantly dryland dairy farm in the Bega Valley and in partnership with his family milks 600 cows, producing approximately 4.5 million litres each year.

Richard has been representing farmers for over twenty years, through various roles in the NSW Dairy Farmers Association, Dairy Industry Development Corporation (DIDCO) and Dairy Farmers Co-operative.

Peter Margin – MBA, BSC (Hons)Peter Margin

Peter Margin joined the Bega Cheese Board on 27 June 2011. He has many years of leadership experience in major Australian and international food companies.

His most recent position was the CEO of ASX-listed food group Goodman Fielder Ltd from 2005 until April 2011.  Prior to that appointment he was the CEO and Chief Operating Officer of National Foods Ltd and has had prior experience at Heinz, Birds Eye Foods and Plumrose.  Peter is also a Director of Nufarm Limited.

Rick was appointed to the Board following the merger of Bega Cheese and Tatura Milk Industries.

Rick joined the TMI Board in 2003 and was heavily involved in negotiating the initial subscription by Bega of 70% shareholding in Tatura Milk.  Rick also took a lead role in negotiating the scheme of arrangement for Bega to acquire the remaining 30% of Tatura Milk in December 2011.

Rick is a dairy farmer and has represented dairy farmers at various levels within the United Dairy farmers of Victoria and also sits on the Innovation Selection Committee for the Gardiner Foundation.  In 2002, he completed the residential program run by the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Jeff Odgers B Bus (Ag Mgt)Jeff Odgers


Jeff was appointed to the Board following the merger of Bega Cheese and Tatura Milk Industries. Jeff has been involved in the dairy industry representative roles for the past 12 years and actively managing farming business for over 20 years.  Jeff served as Chairman of Bonlac Foods Tasmanian Supplier representative scheme from 1999 to 2001, developing a broad understanding of dairy supply chain dynamics.

Following a relocation of business interests to Victoria, Jeff became involved in local irrigator representation as a member of Central Goulburn Water Services Committee from 2004-2007.  Jeff is currently a member of the Australian Dairy Industry Council’s “Water Taskforce” which seeks to achieve balanced outcomes from the Murray Darling Basin Plan.

In 2006 Jeff was appointed a Director with Murray Dairy Inc. and has been Board Chairman since August 2008.  Murray Dairy works closely with numerous organisations on research, extension and industry development that is regionally focused.  Jeff served as a Director of Tatura Milk from 2009-2011.

Jeff’s formal qualifications include an Associate Diploma of Farm Management (1987) and a Bachelor of Business (2005).
